Many designers fall prey to their biases and preconceived notions and assume a final concept design without fully and fairly evaluating all possible options.

A great example is the age-old debate between mono-hull and multi-hull — including catamarans, trimarans, and all of the advanced configurations including wave-piercers, air-ride, swath, and hovercraft. A truly successful ship design requires ground-up, zero-based analysis of all possible solutions.
